Atzalynas as an Organization

The Lithuanian Folk Dancing group, Atzalynas was established in 1971 in Toronto, Canada.

Atzalynas was named for new forest growth, new growth of a Lithuanian forest, a forest with numerous trees from the mighty oak to the swaying birch. The founders of Atzalynas chose the name in the hope that this forest, though far from Lithuania's shores, would grow, be strong and vital.

Over the years Atzalynas' travels have taken the group far and wide. In Canada Atzalynas has performed in Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Guelph, Hamilton, St. Catherine's, Thunder Bay, Quebec City, Vancouver and Montreal. In the United States, the group has visited Chicago, St. Petersburg, Miami, New York and Los Angeles. Further, it has travelled to Lithuania numerous times, as well as Australia and Cuba.

Atzalynas has always actively participated in not only the Toronto Lithuanian community, but also in activities in Toronto and the surrounding areas, appearing at festivals, concerts and other events. The group not only dances but the talented members enrich their performances with readings, Lithuanian songs and instrumental music.
