Over 5 years ago several Atzalynas dancers met to discuss their interest in starting a new dance group which would be unlike any other. The new group was to focus on ballroom dance. An unlikely but very fortunate stroke of luck occurred when several of the founding members of this group came across Mr. Ichtiandras Urniezius, who happened to be more than a perfect choice for coach of this new group, being a professionally trained dancer and teacher! Eventhough all participants in this new group were seasoned Lithuanian folk dancers, the movements demanded by this new form of dance were challenging and demanding. Classes routinely started with a warm up with training steps done to the sounds of the tango, cha-cha, salsa, waltz, etc.
The first significant perfromance put on by this new group took place during the Atzalynas 35th Anniversary Celebration Banquet (April 29th, 2006). In order to perform both at the 35th Anniversary Concert, which was all traditional Lithuanian Folk Dance, the young veteran dancers had to rush from the concert location to the banquet location and change into retro dress in time for the pre-dinner retro dance show which was made up of various dances which also included play acting routines.
During this show, the audience sat in the beautifully decorated hall, and after enjoyed a wonderful and unique meal. Judging by the generous audience ovation it was evident that the audience enjoyed the show tremendously.
They continue to perform at a number of events throughout the community and look to continue to expand the size of the group!
